No surprises at all. Apart from the margin Hayward took the Presidency, which is substantially. I would have thought it would have been a tight tight race. Prendergast got her arse kicked out of office, which isn’t that surprising. And I thought Galaxy would have won on the name, but third!

Anna Duggan only 10 votes behind and James Clark very unlucky only 9 votes in that one.
Disappointed about how the General Exec worked out, everyone that run got in and there was no option for no confidence either. Maybe they planned it

so less than 1/40 students voted for the president.
And this will be the same guy who reckons that G W Bush is an illegitimate pres.

Well done Geoff, I wonder when the last time someone with no prior executive experience won the Presidency was? A solid campaign. And hard luck Nick, you got slammed due to the rest of your exec being fucktards.

Hayward had everything going for him: Labour supporters on campus, Ngai Tauira, Nick Kelly (possibly strategic votes from the right). He didn’t really need a campaign. Could’ve saved on those bro’town pamphlets and given the money to the Labour Party – they’re in dire need of some cash, I hear.

Its a shame about General exec – out of all the motions Nicholas O’Kane proposed at the SGM, the only worthwhile motion was that “No Confidence” be an option in multi-candidate elections.
This would have been helpful in the general exec – there are some people in there that I wanted to vote against (the only option I had was to not vote for them at all – but all that was needed was 1 vote and they would be on, since Alex got Treasurer).

Alex technically has to option of electing to be on the general exec, and allowing Ryan to be Treasurer.
Adding a no-confidence option to the general exec is a little complicated. What happens if you want (for example) four candidates of five standing elected. If you cast votes for each of those five, and one vote for no confidence then the net result is the four candidates you want having zero votes, with the one candidate you don’t want having -1 votes. It can be done, but it needs a little more thought than the motion at the AGM gave it.

Yes,
Perhaps you would have a no confidence option for each candidate which reduced their vote by one. Then the five highest candidates who score over a certain number of votes (could even be 0!) get in.

Yes, comiserations to Gareth. If Geoff hadn’t run I think he would have won it this time.

When I was at Otago we had the option of voting No Confidence in each candidate, regardless of the position. It didn’t reduce the number of votes they obtained however – it only became a relevant number if the number of NC votes in someone exceeded the number of positive votes they received. Could be worth trying out at VUWSA perhaps.

Thats what it wouild be Mike…
If Against > For then For – Against is less than zero.

The way I think “No Confidence” would work, would just be to rank it like any other candidate – and any candidate that scores less votes than “No Confidence” would lose – even if it meant that a position went unfilled.
I dont think any maths is needed, or having a separate “No Confidence” in each candidate.

Could you vote for a candidate and no confidence as well?
Imagine 1000 people like candidates A, B C, and D but dislike candidate E.
They cast votes FOR candidates A, B C, and D and also vote no confidence.
1 Person dislikes everyone and just votes no confidence.
Net result – no-one elected.

There were few suprises in the final election result. As for “no confidence” for general exec I know there are difficulties involved. One option could be to split the general exec up into their seperate positions (A motion propsed by Joel Cosgrove secounded by me tried to do this at the AGM, but it failed with 31 votes in favour, 21 against and didn’t get two thirds required). This does have the diadvantage of effectively having one candidate for each of the postions. The description from Muppet of how no confidence will work is what I imagine it will be. This is how it works at UCSA (Canterbury University)http://www.ucsa.org.nz/fileadmin/downloads/ucsaelectionresults.pdf for their election results.

The UCSA has No Confidence on all positions no matter how many candidates stand. But, if you vote no confidence you can’t vote for any other candidates in that position.
In the last UCSA elections all candidates beat no confidence (PHEW!!)

Graeme, you got to get 1000 voters first
But yes, the idea is that if NC beats a candidate, then you have to have a by-election.

Sucks that both cosgrove and pratley are on the exec together – feel sorry for Geoff having to work with them, although they will probably spend more time flirting with each other than actually doing anything for VUWSA.
Duggan should have won, and losing out by only 10 votes shows that there is not much more confidence in Pratley.
Furthermore, it would not have hurt VUWSA to actually have a hot girl on the exec – it would probably encourage some interest in student politics – we all know that Duggan is HOT and especially in comparison to Prendergast and Pratley – she should have had more posters around campus because she would have had the male vote for certain
